Statement of Nelson Mandela at his Inauguration as President

10 May 1994, Pretoria , Sud Africa .

Your Majesties,
Your Highnesses,
Distinguished Guests,
Comrades and Friends.

Today, all of us do, by our presence here, and by our celebrations in other parts of our country and the world, confer glory and hope to newborn liberty.

Out of the experience of an extraordinary human disaster that lasted too long, must be born a society of which all humanity will be proud.

Our daily deeds as ordinary South Africans must produce an actual South African reality that will reinforce humanity`s belief in justice, strengthen its confidence in the nobility of the human soul and sustain all our hopes for a glorious life for all.

All this we owe both to ourselves and to the peoples of the world who are so well represented here today.

To my compatriots, I have no hesitation in saying that each one of us is as intimately attached to the soil of this beautiful country as are the famous jacaranda trees of Pretoria and the mimosa trees of the bushveld.

Each time one of us touches the soil of this land, we feel a sense of personal renewal. The national mood changes as the seasons change.

We are moved by a sense of joy and exhilaration when the grass turns green and the flowers bloom.

That spiritual and physical oneness we all share with this common homeland explains the depth of the pain we all carried in our hearts as we saw our country tear itself apart in a terrible conflict, and as we saw it spurned, outlawed and isolated by the peoples of the world, precisely because it has become the universal base of the pernicious ideology and practice of racism and racial oppression.

We, the people of South Africa, feel fulfilled that humanity has taken us back into its bosom, that we, who were outlaws not so long ago, have today been given the rare privilege to be host to the nations of the world on our own soil.

We thank all our distinguished international guests for having come to take possession with the people of our country of what is, after all, a common victory for justice, for peace, for human dignity.

We trust that you will continue to stand by us as we tackle the challenges of building peace, prosperity, non-sexism, non-racialism and democracy.

We deeply appreciate the role that the masses of our people and their political mass democratic, religious, women, youth, business, traditional and other leaders have played to bring about this conclusion. Not least among them is my Second Deputy President, the Honourable F.W. de Klerk.

We would also like to pay tribute to our security forces, in all their ranks, for the distinguished role they have played in securing our first democratic elections and the transition to democracy, from blood-thirsty forces which still refuse to see the light.

The time for the healing of the wounds has come.

The moment to bridge the chasms that divide us has come.

The time to build is upon us.

We have, at last, achieved our political emancipation. We pledge ourselves to liberate all our people from the continuing bondage of poverty, deprivation, suffering, gender and other discrimination.

We succeeded to take our last steps to freedom in conditions of relative peace. We commit ourselves to the construction of a complete, just and lasting peace.

We have triumphed in the effort to implant hope in the breasts of the millions of our people. We enter into a covenant that we shall build the society in which all South Africans, both black and white, will be able to walk tall, without any fear in their hearts, assured of their inalienable right to human dignity - a rainbow nation at peace with itself and the world.

As a token of its commitment to the renewal of our country, the new Interim Government of National Unity will, as a matter of urgency, address the issue of amnesty for various categories of our people who are currently serving terms of imprisonment.

We dedicate this day to all the heroes and heroines in this country and the rest of the world who sacrificed in many ways and surrendered their lives so that we could be free.

Their dreams have become reality. Freedom is their reward.

We are both humbled and elevated by the honour and privilege that you, the people of South Africa, have bestowed on us, as the first President of a united, democratic, non-racial and non-sexist government.

We understand it still that there is no easy road to freedom

We know it well that none of us acting alone can achieve success.

We must therefore act together as a united people, for national reconciliation, for nation building, for the birth of a new world.

Let there be justice for all.
Let there be peace for all.
Let there be work, bread, water and salt for all.
Let each know that for each the body, the mind and the soul have been freed to fulfill themselves.

Never, never and never again shall it be that this beautiful land will again experience the oppression of one by another and suffer the indignity of being the skunk of the world.

Let freedom reign.
The sun shall never set on so glorious a human achievement!

Maestà,
Vostre Altezze,
Illustri ospiti,
Compagni e amici.

Oggi, tutti noi, dalla nostra presenza qui, e dalle nostre celebrazioni in altre parti del nostro paese e del mondo, conferiscono la gloria e la speranza di libertà neonato.
Fuori l'esperienza di una catastrofe straordinaria dell'uomo che è durato troppo a lungo, deve nascere una società, di cui tutta l'umanità sarà orgoglioso.
I nostri atti quotidiani, come ordinario sudafricani deve produrre una realtà attuale del Sud Africa, che rafforzerà l'umanità `s fede nella giustizia, rafforzare la sua fiducia nella nobiltà dell'animo umano e sostenere tutte le nostre speranze per una vita gloriosa per tutti.
Tutto questo lo dobbiamo sia a noi stessi e per i popoli del mondo che sono così ben rappresentati qui oggi.
Per i miei connazionali, non ho esitazione a dire che ognuno di noi è intimamente collegato al suolo di questo bellissimo paese come lo sono gli alberi di jacaranda famoso di Pretoria e le mimose del Bushveld.
Ogni volta che uno di noi tocca il suolo di questa terra, ci sentiamo un senso di rinnovamento personale. L'umore cambia nazionale come il cambiamento stagioni.
Siamo mossi da un senso di gioia e di euforia quando l'erba diventa verde e il fiore dei fiori.
Tale unità spirituale e fisica che tutti noi condividiamo con questa patria comune, spiega la profondità del dolore che tutti noi effettuati nei nostri cuori come si è visto strappare il nostro paese si distingue in un conflitto terribile, e come abbiamo visto è disprezzato, messo fuori legge e isolato dai popoli del mondo, proprio perché è diventata la base universale della perniciosa ideologia e la pratica del razzismo e di oppressione razziale.
Noi, il popolo del Sud Africa, si sentono soddisfatti che l'umanità ci ha portato indietro nel suo seno, che noi, che erano fuorilegge non molto tempo fa, oggi hanno avuto il raro privilegio di essere ospite per le nazioni del mondo da soli del suolo.
Ringraziamo tutti i nostri illustri ospiti internazionali per essere venuti a prendere possesso con la gente del nostro paese di ciò che è, dopo tutto, una vittoria comune per la giustizia, di pace, di dignità umana.
Siamo certi che continuerete a stare da noi, come noi affrontare le sfide della costruzione della pace, prosperità, non sessismo, razzismo e non-democrazia.
Apprezziamo profondamente il ruolo che le masse del nostro popolo e la loro massa politici democratici, religiosi, donne, giovani, imprese, capi tradizionali e gli altri hanno svolto per realizzare questa conclusione. Non ultimo tra questi è il mio secondo vice Presidente, l'Onorevole FW de Klerk.
Vorremmo anche rendere omaggio alle nostre forze di sicurezza, in tutte le loro fila, per il ruolo distinto che hanno svolto nel garantire la nostra alle prime elezioni democratiche e la transizione verso la democrazia, dalle forze assetati di sangue che ancora si rifiutano di vedere la luce.
Il tempo per la guarigione delle ferite è venuto.
Il momento di colmare gli abissi che dividono ci è venuto.
Il tempo di costruire è su di noi.
Abbiamo, finalmente, raggiunto il nostro emancipazione politica. Ci impegniamo a liberare tutto il nostro popolo dalla schiavitù continua della povertà, privazione, sofferenza, discriminazione di genere e altro.
Siamo riusciti a prendere i nostri ultimi passi verso la libertà in condizioni di relativa pace. Ci impegniamo per la costruzione di un completo, di pace giusta e duratura.
Abbiamo trionfato nel tentativo di impiantare nei seni speranza dei milioni di nostri cittadini. Entriamo in un patto che noi costruire la società in cui tutti i sudafricani, sia in bianco e nero, saranno in grado di camminare a testa alta, senza alcun timore nei loro cuori, certi della loro inalienabile diritto alla dignità umana - una nazione arcobaleno in pace con se stessa e il mondo.
Come segno del suo impegno per il rinnovamento del nostro paese, il nuovo governo provvisorio di unità nazionale sarà, in via d'urgenza, affrontare la questione della amnistia per varie categorie di nostra gente che è attualmente scontando pene detentive.
Dedichiamo questa giornata a tutti gli eroi e le eroine di questo paese e il resto del mondo che ha sacrificato in molti modi e la loro vita affinché noi potessimo essere liberi.
I loro sogni sono diventati realtà. La libertà è la loro ricompensa.
Siamo entrambi umiliati ed elevato da l'onore e il privilegio che voi, popolo del Sudafrica, hanno concesso a noi, come il primo Presidente di un'Europa unita, democratica, il governo non razzista e non sessista.
L'abbiamo capito ancora che non vi è nessuna strada facile per la libertà
Lo sappiamo bene che nessuno di noi da soli può avere successo.
Dobbiamo quindi agire insieme come un popolo unito, per la riconciliazione nazionale, per la costruzione della nazione, per la nascita di un nuovo mondo.
Fa che ci sia giustizia per tutti.
Ci sia pace per tutti.
Vi sia di lavoro, pane, acqua e sale per tutti.
Lasciate ogni sapere che per ogni corpo, la mente e l'anima sono stati liberati per soddisfare se stessi.
Mai, mai, mai e di nuovo sono essere che questa bellissima terra sarà di nuovo l'esperienza l'oppressione di uno ad un altro e subire l'umiliazione di essere la puzzola del mondo.
Lasciate che il regno di libertà.
Il sole non sono mai fissato su un risultato così gloriosa umano!
