Sylvia’s large wall hangings are based on
Biblical themes and express her inner artistic and spiritual world. Although
one may view the tapestries as abstract compositions, the artist was guided by
images that lay dormant in the back of her mind for many years. Genesis,
Prophets, The Song of Songs and The Land are some of her topics which lend
them very attractive to be shown in many places of worship.
Sylvia’s tapestry creations are on view in many public and private venues.
They are displayed in U.S., Argentina, Uruguay, Brazil, Chile, Israel, England,
and Switzerland.
Her abstract compositions on Biblical themes with their strong paint
textures and delicacy of the woven threads, evoke a sense of a dynamic storm
or tranquil balance. As such, her tapestries are also being displayed in art
galleries as well as public institutions such as Shaarei Zedek Hospital, in
Jerusalem.
Sylvia Feinstein was born in Buenos Aires, Argentina, where she was
awarded her advanced degree in Fine Arts at the Faculty of Art (M.Belgrano and
P. Pueyrredon). She continued her studies in painting, etching and ceramics
and, expanding her medium, she completed her studies in weaving (Montevideo)
and enamels (Bezalel Art academy, Jerusalem).
In addition to creating tapestries, Ms. Feinstein teaches, organizes
weaving seminars and has developed a craft exchange program between several
countries.
In 1977 she has made her permanent home in Israel, and continued her
artistic work there. Thus in 1994 she was invited by the Israel Ibero-America
Cultural Center to lecture on Israeli artcrafts and to develop new cultural
ties throughout eight countries of Central and South America. In 1996 she was
invited to exhibit her work and to lecture in Belgique.
Ms. Feinstein has participated in 50 individual and collective
exhibitions; her works have been selected to be shown in eight Municipal and
National Annuals Salons in Argentina, Belgium, and Uruguay, as well as in
several competitions in Israel.
